Effects of Climate Change on California's Ocean Beach Pier

Climate change threatens California's iconic piers, including San Diego's Ocean Beach Pier. As we can recall, the pier has been closed since October 2023 due to intensified storms and high surf damage. Geologist Patrick Abbott warns that the pier is especially sensitive to climate change. The iconic Christmas tree near the pier has continued to weaken as the sand holding its roots disintegrates. As the ocean comes up farther, the tree is pulling up saltier water, making it difficult to build stronger piers to stand up to increased energy in the ocean. The City of San Diego is continuing to reimagine the pier, with $8.4 million in state funding designated for the project. Construction might not be completed for another four years. Draw Kiel, an Ocean Beach resident, believes that the pier is an important piece of California culture that could be lost if it isn't rebuilt.
